The Science of Stillness: How Yoga Nidra Supports Deep Rest
Kathryn Pol | NOV 2, 2025
Step into stillness with Yoga Nidra, a science-supported practice of conscious relaxation. Through gentle guidance, you’ll enter a restful state where the body unwinds, the mind quiets, and the nervous system resets. In a world that constantly asks us to move faster and do more, stillness has become a rare gift. Yet within that stillness lies one of the most powerful tools for healing and restoration.
Yoga Nidra is a practice of non-doing and works on the level of listening & feeling. Yoga Nidra is a state of conscious relaxation — a place between wakefulness and sleep where the body deeply rests while the mind remains aware. It’s here, in this quiet space, that true restoration and healing can occur.
This practice is personal to me. I was introduced to Yoga Nidra prior to my diagnosis at a yoga retreat. I didn't understand it until much later. After my diagnosis, it became essential during my cancer treatments to help me rest, sleep, reduce anxiety and create a mindset for the overall healing I deeply desired. My intention is to share this practice with others.
Research shows that guided Yoga Nidra can reduce stress, calm the nervous system, and improve sleep quality. During the practice, the brain shifts into slower wave patterns — the same ones seen in deep sleep and meditation.
This shift activates the parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes called the “rest and digest” state, allowing the body to release tension, lower cortisol levels, and restore balance.
Regular Yoga Nidra practice has been shown to support:
Better sleep and reduced insomnia
Improved focus and emotional balance
Lower stress and anxiety levels
Enhanced overall well-being and resilience
Trauma
Chronic pain relief

In a typical session, you simply lie down, supported and comfortable, as you’re guided through breath awareness, body relaxation, sensations and visualization. There’s nothing to achieve — only to allow.
With practice, Yoga Nidra becomes a powerful reminder that rest is productive, and stillness is a form of strength. In a modern world that celebrates constant motion, this ancient practice teaches us the art of being instead of doing.
At New Lotus Collective, our guided Yoga Nidra sessions invite you to slow down, reset, and reconnect to the quiet wisdom within. True rest begins when we give ourselves permission to pause.
